Bread Machine Bread
Makes a soft bread with a flaky crust.
- 2 1/4 tsp yeast (1 packet)
- 2 tbsp sugar (we use pure can sugar (crystals)) any sugar works
- 1 cup warm water
- 3 cups flour
- 1 1/2-2 tsp salt
- 1/4 cup oil
Add the first three ingredients together in a bowl, mix well with a spoon & let sit for 10 minutes until it foams
2 1/4 tsp yeast (1 packet)(make sure this is at room temperature). If it's taken from the fridge, put it in a bowl and let it sit for 15 minutes before adding the water
2 tbsp sugar
and 1 cup warm H2O (slightly warm; not hot or it messes up the yeast, not cold or it won't activate the yeast)
While your waiting for 10 minutes get the flour, etc ready
Add all dry ingredients to bread pan.
3 cups flour
1 1/2-2 tsp salt (make a whole in the flour and put the salt there then cover the salt with flour
1/4 cup oil (I like to add the oil right before adding the yeast/sugar/water mixture)
Add yeast/sugar/water mixture to the bread pan last
Choose basic settings on bread machine and set to 1.5 lbs & light or medium color). It should take about 3 hours total once the machine starts.
After the bread machine kneads the dough it should beep. This is where you should check the consistency of the dough. If it's to soggy add some flour. If it's too dry/hard add a tiny bit of water. You can start over from this step if the dough doesn't seem right it will mix again and only add another 10 minutes to your overall time. If you measure properly you shouldn't need to make any adjustments.
Don't use the express settings. It takes half the time using the express settings but results won't be so good with this recipe
While the bread is being made you can open the bread machine to look at it while it's mixing at the beginning but afterwards when it's starts rising don't open the lid
When it's done it should stay warm for an hour and then turn off by itself. It's best to take it out during this time, either right after it's done (a few minutes to cool) but before the hour. If you leave it too long it could get harder from the outside but should still be soft inside.
To remove the bread, take it out, let it cool for a few minutes and then flip the pan upside down.
It's harder to cut when it's fresh but if you wait 10-15 minutes it should be good. It's also a lot easier to cut if you use a proper (long) bread knife
